About Us!

We call ourselves A Life Medieval but what does that mean?

We are a tight group of friends and family who collectively believe the single best way to understand medieval history is to experience it, first hand and as close as possible. For us it's not enough to look at history and artifacts in books and museums. Deeper understanding comes from getting your hands dirty with experience.

Experience wearing the weight of armor, how it changes the way you walk, the way you stand, the way you move. Making some of the armor yourself, to understand how the pieces work together.

Experience felling a tree and constructing a bow its from riven blanks. Fletching your own arrows, then taking aim and letting loose towards the target.

Experience studying period furniture, building it from scratch and learning how your ancestors might interact with these every day pieces of material culture.

Experience cooking and eating foods from period recipes, made with the most accurate ingredients possible and tasting something the modern tongue hasn't experienced for a long, long time.  .

We aren't simply interested in learning these lessons for ourselves. We very much enjoy teaching and spreading the experience to everyone who gives us a chance.

We are not interested in pretending to be characters from the past. We are not actors and actresses. We are interested in being real people who have spent hours and days of our lives gathering a base of historical knowledge and experience and we are interested in sharing what we've learned.

We are also interested in finding others who would like to join us.

Our background:

A Life Medieval is a product of evolution.

Originally founded in 1995 as "Tribe Woden Thor" as an outlet for both medieval reenactment and live action role playing. We wanted to create atmosphere where friends and families of like interests could gather together and participate. It was very important that everyone, including our children, feel welcome and included, and this was different from the culture we experienced around other similar groups. As we grew and learned and we moved away from the fantastic and towards the historical.

Tribe Woden Thor focused primarily on medieval Germanic and Norse cultures stretching from about 800 - 1200 A.D. Through continued study we realized the need to change and expand our horizons. The smallish box we'd placed ourselves inside did not accurately define us any longer. Our knowledge and ambition had grown past the Tribe's parameters.

In 2013 all the members voted and chose a new name and a new identity and "A Life Medieval" was forged. We expanded our focus forwards to include the years of the Crusades and backwards to include more of the Viking Age. Before we focused on creating characters from history; we now focus simply on the history in as many facets as we have members to present it.
